Personally, I could handle a house with one bedroom, one living room, one kitchen, and one bathroom. But if you make all of that spacious or with high ceilings, its bigger than it seems. Of course places like that in cities are considered trendy... and rent is at outrageous prices.
I love The Talking Heads.
People don't want to live in houses anymore, they want to live in museums. And God forbid the kids each don't get their own room - they might have to learn to get along, compromise, share - nope, totally unacceptable.
I'd like a garage....and maybe one more bathroom.....but I do have a pool....so.....Eh.....It's a roof!
